Exciting First Day in Montemor-o-Velho

Competition 21 August 2024

The first day of the 2024 FISU World University Championship Canoe Sports in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal, saw a noticeable shift in atmosphere compared to the previous day. The hangars were quieter, but the action on the water was intense as the races officially began. With a bit of wind making the conditions tougher, the athletes faced a challenging day, but they didn’t let it hinder their performance. Windy weather can create choppier waters, adding an extra layer of difficulty for kayakers and canoeists, who must work harder to maintain their speed and stability. Despite these challenges, the athletes gave their all, showcasing their skills and determination.

Hungary emerged as the dominant force on the water, taking home the most gold medals. Among the other gold medalists were athletes from Italy, the Czech Republic, Poland, Spain, Slovakia, and host nation Portugal.

The first gold medal of the day was claimed by Katarzyna Szperkiewicz from Poland, whose smile was unshakable as she celebrated her victory. Thrilled with her achievement, she shared her excitement and mentioned that this being her final tournament of the season, she is looking forward to a well-deserved vacation with her partner, who has been a constant support throughout her journey.

Portugal’s own Andre Moreira and Pedro Casinha, partners in the K2 200m race, were overjoyed with their gold medal win. They expressed immense pride in winning on home soil, sharing their gratitude towards their coaches, families, and supporters who cheered them on throughout the race. The gold medal came as a pleasant surprise, as they were confident in securing a medal but didn’t expect it to be gold. Looking ahead, they hope to enjoy the upcoming races, which they believe is the most important aspect of their participation.

As the first day drew to a close, the sun set over Montemor-o-Velho, with athletes leaving the site with smiles on their faces. The excitement for the next day’s competitions was visible as they prepared to continue doing what they love the most.

As we await the next day of races, here are today’s results and some photos from the event.
