Opening Ceremony 21 August 2024

The 2024 FISU World University Championship Canoe Sports officially began yesterday with a vibrant opening ceremony at the historic Montemor-o-Velho Castle.

With its towering walls and rich 9th-century history, the castle provided a majestic backdrop, highlighting the cultural significance of this event for both the city and the global university sports community. As a symbol of resilience and tradition, Montemor-o-Velho Castle was the perfect setting for this prestigious competition.

The event has brought together 250 participants from 24 countries, all competing for the World University Champion title. In the next few days, from the 21st to the 24th of August, these athletes will showcase their skills and the spirit of camaraderie and international cooperation that defines this championship.

During the ceremony, Mr. Ricardo Nora, representing the Organizing Committee, along with the Mayor of Montemor-o-Velho, Mr. Emílio Torrão, FISU Executive Committee Member Mr. Marko Zunic, and the Secretary of State for Sport, Mr. Pedro Dias, delivered inspiring speeches.

They collectively emphasized the critical role of students in the success of this event, highlighting that student-athletes are the heart of the organization. They expressed deep gratitude to all those involved—athletes, students, volunteers, and organizers—who have poured their heart and soul into making this event a reality.

Their speeches echoed a shared sentiment: the championship is not only a competition but also a celebration of youth, sportsmanship, and the vibrant student community.

The ceremony was opened with a captivating performance by the Fados Group ‘Canto a Coimbra,’ setting a soulful tone that resonated through the ancient walls of the castle. The evening concluded with an emotional performance by the Nadine Loureiro Dance School, leaving the audience in anticipation for the days ahead.

The energy and team spirit were high, as excitement for the first day of competition filled the air. As Montemor-o-Velho Castle stands tall, it once again becomes a place where history is made, this time through the passion and determination of the world’s best university athletes.
